When Dara brought the Eurovision trophy home to Bulgaria in 2026 with “Bangaranga,” most international fans immediately assumed the 2027 contest would head straight to the capital. However, in a surprising turn of events announced on August 13, the EBU and BNT officially selected Burgas as the Eurovision 2027 host city.

So, why is Eurovision 2027 in Burgas instead of Sofia? How did the coastal city win the highly competitive host city selection process?

Here is why the Black Sea coast was chosen for the 71st edition of the contest.

The Arena Burgas Capacity and Technical Specs

The primary reason Burgas won the bid is Arena Burgas. Opened in 2023, this state-of-the-art facility was built exactly for international mega-events.

Unlike older, legacy venues in Sofia, the Arena Burgas capacity and structural engineering meet every strict technical requirement of the EBU. Most importantly, the roof load capacity can easily support the massive, heavy lighting and stage rigs required for a modern Eurovision Song Contest production.

Unmatched Tourism Infrastructure

Eurovision brings tens of thousands of fans, press, and delegations. Burgas and its surrounding coastal resorts—such as Sunny Beach, Nessebar, and Sozopol—possess a massive hospitality infrastructure.

In early May, before the peak summer season begins, tens of thousands of hotel beds sit empty. This pre-existing infrastructure is perfectly suited to absorb the massive influx of Eurovision fans without putting unsustainable pressure on the local housing market, a problem that would heavily strain Sofia’s hotel capacity.

The Black Sea Coastal Appeal

Finally, the Burgas bid highlighted the opportunity to showcase a different, vibrant side of Bulgaria to a global TV audience of over 160 million.

May is a beautiful time on the Black Sea coast, providing the perfect backdrop for the EuroVillage, open-air EuroClub events, and a relaxed, resort-style atmosphere for fans. While Sofia has the big-city hustle, Burgas offers a unique coastal Eurovision experience that fans will remember for years.
